Art and the Admirer: I. Gorman Designer Show a Hit Once Again

While we’re finally starting to recover from the daze of the I. Gorman Annual Designer Show, we can’t claim that we have a lack of stories to tell to anyone who couldn’t make it. The truth is that beautiful jewelry, great company and a glass of champagne could make any weekend fabulous.

But let’s say this: it wasn’t just any weekend.  In fact, it started on Thursday evening as the Gorman posse ushered in one by one, designers from the globe over. And of course, in the pre-show excitement we always get a sneak peak at the jewelry to be unveiled the next day. After a few dozen rounds of ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ we all tried to get our act together and rest up for the next day.

Friday started with a bang. Now, our designers aren’t your average artists. No thick rimmed glasses, fauxhemian ideals or exasperated dramatics. Among our group of eleven designers were the most talented yet humble artists you can find. For those of you that made it in over the weekend, did you have a favorite designer?

As you walked in you were greeted on the left by Alishan, a long time I. Gorman fave, and his wife Lydia. The two, who have been in business for decades just ooze with sophistication and grace. That is before we even took a look at their jewelry which as usual was elegant and dazzlingly unique.

If you had a chance to talk to Peter Schmid of Atelier Zobel, you could have seen his eyes light up as he picked up his creations piece by piece and explained the story behind them. His favorite: an asymmetrically carved piece of turquoise in a bold cuff bracelet. When we asked him how he designs his jewelry he told us that he simply lets the materials inspire him. Catch our entire video conversation with him here.

And of course, the alarmingly dapper Marcel Roelofs and Michael Weggenmann were wooing the crowd – and not just with their German accents! The list is too long to ramble off, so if you’re aching to know more just make sure you come by next time.

The energy was buzzing in the air as soon as the doors opened. That is no surprise; what is art without an admirer? What followed was a mix between Match.com and star-aligned fate. Everyone mingled through, admiring the beauty of it all until they found the one sparkling, glowing, marvelous piece of jewelry that was calling out to them. Some of us had a few pieces calling out in unison! And if you thought champagne might make the brain foggy, know this: it can make things sparkle a bit more too.

And the weekend continued like so with the entire store buzzing, glowing and laughing. We have to admit that it was one of the best events in the history of I. Gorman shows. Not only did we have the most amazing designers you can imagine but, YOU, our wonderful patrons brought the show to life.

So with the energy of the show still resonating and the winter season in full swing, we’ll leave you with this: no words or pictures could encompass the I. Gorman Annual Designer Show, so we hope you can make it next year!

I. Gorman Jewelers Welcomes The Fashion Designs Of Antonio Bernardo and Enric Majoral

There's nothing more exciting for us here at I. Gorman Jewelers than sharing the work of our favorite jewelry designers with friends and customers from DC and beyond. Sure, it's a blast to walk in the door and dive straight into the fabulous world of fashion jewelry, hand crafted in places a distant as South America and Europe--but have you ever wondered how such an exceptional collection of jewelry comes to be?

Did you know that the store's founders, Ivan and Bonnie Gorman, actually take the time every year to travel across the globe, exploring bustling city avenues and quaint village streets alike, in search of that perfect new designer to compliment their current selection? It may sound glamorous, but that's all part of the job when it comes to running DC's hippest designer oriented jewelry destination!

But don't take my word for it, come in and see for yourself. Ivan and Bonnie may well be on hand to work with you personally, and don't be surprised if they introduce you to the designs of Antonio Bernardo and Enric Majoral, two of the coolest new fashion jewelry designers to grace the cases at I. Gorman's!

Born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Antonio Berndardo is, without a doubt, one of Brazil's most innovative and gifted fine jewelry designers. With German heritage and Swiss goldsmith training, Bernardo has carved a niche for himself by creating an award winning collection of visually and intellectually stimulating designs in 18kt gold and silver.

Bernardo's work portrays a type of geometrical genius that most artists could only dream of, allowing him to explore a diversity of striking forms that are rarely captured in jewelry. No stranger to fun and fashion forward, this playful 18kt white gold cocktail ring sports a dazzling quartet of bezel set violet amethysts.

From picturesque Formentera Island in Catalonia, Spain Enric Majoral captures the colors, shapes and natural life forms that surround him, creating jewelry with movement and artistry that seems to take on a life of its own. Favoring 18kt gold and oxidized silver to achieve a refreshingly organic color palette, Majoral draws upon the beauty of organic lines and shapes in a way that is deliberate, yet unexpected.

Majoral's honest craftsmanship and ability to capture the essence of natural forms is clear in this charming 18kt yellow gold and diamond bracelet, which reflects the simple reality of life on a beautiful Mediterranean island.

Don't miss your perfect chance to check out the beautiful designs of Antonio Bernardo and Enric Majoral at I. Gorman Jewelers' Annual Designer Showcase, Friday, December 3rd and Saturday, December 4th.

The Exceptional, Interchangeable Necklaces Of Marcel Roelofs At I. Gorman Jewelers

While Bridal Jewelry is always in demand, due to the simple fact that happy people, young and old, will always be tying the knot, sadly, the wonderful world of Fashion Jewelry often seems dependent on the economy. When outlooks on the government's or our own financial situation takes a turn for the worse, people often react by clamming up and depriving themselves of the more beautiful things in life...

I. Gorman Jewelers is here to remind you that an exceptional piece of fashion jewelry is not a discretionary purchase, in fact, if chosen carefully, it is nothing less than an extension of one's self! A well designed jewel can become as much a part of a woman's entity as her flowing hair or graceful gait, and therefore, surely not something to be sacrificed! But the power of fine jewelry is nothing to be taken lightly, and at I. Gorman's we offer designs by only the most gifted artists, who have learned to harness this power in creating gorgeous jewelry to immaculately compliment a woman or a man.

One such artist who possesses this gift, to no small extent, is German designer Marcel Roelofs. Drawing on the strong tradition of master gemstone cutters of the Idar-Oberstein region of Germany, Marcel Roelofs takes naturally inspired art to a new frontier. While he has had much success creating innovative ring and earring collections, Marcel is best known for designing some of the world's coolest fashion forward Necklaces!

Recognizable for his avant-garde use of carved gems in intricate handmade gold and platinum settings, Roelofs has developed a stunning collection of interchangeable clasp pendants that can be paired with a wide variety of neck coils, chains or strands of organic beads, to create exceptional, highly personalized necklaces.

Never a conformist, Roelof's Tanzanite and Raw Granite Bead Necklace offers a refreshingly contemporary perspective on just what can be called fine jewelry. Set in 18kt yellow gold, this unique pendant is fully interchangeable, allowing customization to suit your mood or wardrobe!

At the other end of the color spectrum, this interchangeable Orange Citrine Pendant is expertly complimented by its stainless steel multi-strand black neck coil. Set in 18kt yellow gold this dynamic pendant is perfect for the fall or winter season.

I. Gorman Jewelers is excited to offer you a selection of Marcel Roelofs interchangeable designs, that is sure to suit a diversity of tastes and styles, helping you to discover that perfect jewel that is not just an accessory, but an extension of yourself! We welcome you to visit our showroom any time, Monday through Saturday, but if you can, don't miss the chance to meet the designer himself, during our Designer Showcase event from 11am-6pm, on Friday or Saturday, December 3-4.

I. Gorman Jewelers Designer Maevona Goes Beyond Jewelry

At I. Gorman Jewelers, it is our goal to track down the world's most talented designers of fine jewelry, and the success with which we've achieved this goal is immediately apparent when you pass inside our gallery doors. Interestingly, when you work with such an innovative and dynamic group of designers, it becomes clear that good design is a skill that will not be restricted by the invisible boundaries of a single discipline, such as Jewelry or Furniture.

Several of our designers have taken a chance, trusting in their fine-tuned eye for the aesthetic, by testing the waters of other artistic disciplines--others have made a habit of it. Maeve Gillies, of Maevona, is one of these people, and boy, are we glad she has!

Best known for her beautiful bridal jewelry collections, featuring flowing, Celtic-inspired forms, made of 18kt gold, platinum and diamonds, she was recently commissioned to create a stunning commemorative bottle for one of the world's finest and most expensive liquors, Scotland's Highland Park 50 Year Old single malt whisky.

A classic Maevona bridal design, the Jura engagement ring highlights a single brilliant round diamond, set most gracefully in colorful 18kt yellow or rose gold, tastefully contrasted by its platinum shank. We are happy to offer a wide selection of Maevona designs. View more at the I. Gorman Jewelers website or Facebook page.

Highland Park 50 Year Old is the distillery’s oldest and most prestigious release. Only 275 bottles of this remarkable Limited Edition are available, each encased in Maeve Gillies' extraordinary silver "net-cage" design. It is a vatting of five casks distilled in 1960. Like all Highland Park, the 50 year old has been cask-harmonised, that is to say, refilled into casks upon reaching maturity in order to ensure perfect balance and consistency. To ensure the full impact of the rich, complex flavours that come from a lifetime of maturation, Highland Park 50 Year Old has been bottled at 44.8% abv.

Inspired by the elemental forces of Orkney, each bottle is hand-crafted from sterling silver and designed by Maeve Gillies, an internationally-renowned designer of engagement rings and bridal jewellery based in New York. Maeve is also a ‘Global Scot’, a business ambassador for Scotland. Her design for Highland Park 50 Year Old celebrates Orkney; in particular the influence of the sea, wild weather and the passage of time.

Henrich and Denzel: Designing With Earth's Most Precious Materials

I. Gorman Jewelers has made it their mission to bless Washington DC with the the absolute best in fine designer jewelry, and without Henrich and Denzel, their collection simply wouldn't be complete. While many of I. Gorman's talented designers have looked outside the box, creating unique jewelry from exciting alternative materials such as blackened silver, titanium and Gem Ceramic, Henrich and Denzel has done just the opposite. Embracing their own vision of what makes jewelry most exceptional, they have chosen to concentrate solely on the Earth's most precious materials.

Firmly setting their roots along the banks of Lake Constance over 25 years ago, Henrich and Denzel have earned their spot as one of Germany's most respected fine jewelry designers. In an environment rich with the tradition of world-class goldsmiths, they have thrived by offering a wide selection of wedding, commitment and engagement ring designs that are only available in platinum and 18kt gold, set with diamonds.

Using only the highest quality materials, Henrich and Denzel relies on a finely tuned fusion of traditional hand-craftsmanship and modern technologies to create immaculate, modern style jewelry that is meant to last a lifetime and beyond.

While the options are extensive, one of my personal favorite Henrich and Denzel designs on hand at I. Gorman Jewelers is the Undulating Diamond band. Available in 18kt gold or platinum, this gorgeous wedding/commitment band achieves an ideal compromise between masculine and feminine form, making it perfect for a man or a woman. Come in to I. Gorman Jewelers to see just what I mean!

Furrer Jacot: Fine Swiss Craftsmanship at I. Gorman Jewelers

Some fine jewelry designers are known for their elegantly sculptured forms, highly detailed embellishment, or use of expensive gemstones; others make a name for themselves by achieving the highest standards of precision craftsmanship.

Renowned Swiss designer, Furrer Jacot, is of the the latter group. While many of their designs are exceptionally innovative and unique, Furrer Jacot is most famous for offering a bridal collection with a level of craftsmanship that surpasses even the highest standards of fine jewelry quality control. It is this attention to detail combined with a passion for quality design that has earned the brand worldwide recognition since its beginnings in 1858.

Furrer Jacot has built a vast collection of outstanding bridal jewelry, offering a diversity of styles that is sure to satisfy every individuals taste. This Chiseled Gold wedding/commitment band is a perfect example of the exacting precision achieved in all Furrer Jacot designs. Available in 18kt white and yellow gold or platinum, in a range of widths and the option for flush set diamonds, this style is a great choice for both men and women

I. Gorman Jewelers are proud to offer a wide selection of unique Furrer Jacot wedding, commitment and engagement rings, giving you the chance to "style your own and own your style."

At I. Gorman Jewelers Great Business Starts With a Great Staff

I. Gorman Jewelers was built on the founding premise that the key to success in any retail environment is through exemplary customer service. Naturally, the first step in providing top notch customer service is settling for nothing less than the finest sales associates available. This goes hand in hand with I. Gorman's penchant for keeping it in the family--whether their team members carry the Gorman name or have been adopted into the clan based on their exceptional service record, you can rest assured that I. Gorman Jewelers is a family business, through and through.

In a sense, I. Gorman Jewelers can be defined by their team members, and one particular sales associate has been a cornerstone of that team for more than a decade. Venita Peterson is blessed with all the natural capacities of a great sales associate, but she says the one talent that lets her rise above the pack is an extraordinary memory.

"I've always had the ability to remember a person's name, personal history and the story behind their jewelry purchase, whether it's one day, one year or more since they've been in the store. I say their name when they enter the store again and pick up right where we left..."

Whatever her secret is, Venita's devotion to her customers, as well as the I. Gorman team, has landed her in the limelight on more than one occasion. InStore magazine even tracked Venita down for an interview to be included in their coveted "Smooth Seller" feature. Here's a quote from Venita's InStore article.

Teamwork is very important to my success. I don't fool myself and think that I could reach this level of sales success without such an incredible group of people around me.

What surprises me most about working at I. Gorman's is the referral business. It's simply amazing. We send out gift baskets or thank you notes to all customers who give us a referral. It doesn't matter if the referral customer buys something or not, we just want the person who recommended us to know how much we appreciate them mentioning I. Gorman to a family member or friend.

Exotic, Erotic, Exceptional: Atelier Zobel Designs at I. Gorman Jewelers

It takes an exceptionally creative mind to accomplish what a successful fine jewelry designer must do--conceptualizing a 3-D form in one's mind and transforming it into a beautiful piece of jewelry, that is comfortable to wear, is an extremely complicated task. It is this testing ground that separates good designers from the great, and one jewelry icon that has risen above the pack is Michael Zobel, of Atelier Zobel.

Born in Morocco, raised in Spain and trained in Germany, Zobel has been creating some of the world's most avant garde and provocative fashion jewelry designs for nearly 40 years. Well know throughout the fashion world for his innovative methods of combining precious and semi-precious metals and gemstones in strikingly fresh ways, Zobel passionately adheres to his mission of designing exotic, yet comfortable fine jewelry.

A master at the art of technical soldering, Michael Zobel utilizes his remarkable talent by fusing gold, platinum and silver into colorful patterns, finished with a variety of stimulating textures that are truly one of a kind. Unique designs, such as this flowing 18kt rose gold and platinum ring, adorned with aquamarine and flush set diamonds, are guaranteed to look stunning at a cocktail party or on the runway.

Not limiting himself to ring designs, Zobel has shown special interest in creating a spectacular collection of high-end cuff bracelets. Replicating his hallmark style of colorful patterns on a large scale, the crisscrossed design of this 18kt yellow and white gold cuff is accentuated by an impressive cubic grid of raw diamonds.

Alishan: The Crossroads of Gorgeously Gothic & Strikingly Sculptural at I. Gorman Jewelers

If you're searching for fabulous jewelry that's a little bit outside the box, look no further than I. Gorman Jewelers. With an all-star team of exceptional jewelry designers, one artist sticks out for creating jewelry with a balance of gothic and sculptural tones that is impossible to find elsewhere.

As a self-taught goldsmith with experience in drawing, sculpture and furniture design, Alishan approaches jewelry as miniature sculpture that is wearable. Armenian born, US trained, and world traveled, Alishan has taken full advantage of his unconventional background to design using an eclectic mix of textures, techniques and cultural references, in a style that is very much his own.

The artist is clear in his goal to create jewelry for the sophisticated wearer; strong and accomplished, an individual with confidence, style and taste, who appreciates graceful beauty and elegance.

But Alishan's jewelry IS for everyone, and if you're not sure the person he describes is you, don't fret--wearing a piece of fine art such as the stunning Flame Ring above is quite likely to give you the confidence boost you've been searching for. With this handcrafted, oxidized sterling silver and 18kt yellow gold fashion ring, set with white diamonds and a brilliant rhodolite garnet, you should prepare for compliments!

Niessing: Reaching the Pinnacle of Minimalist Elegance at I. Gorman Jewelers

Marriage is a sacred bond and every person has a different ideal when choosing the ring that will represent their commitment of love. But unless a person has pictured in their minds-eye that exact style that they just can't live without, they can expect to weather a barrage of choices when it comes to choosing the perfect ring--and don't be surprised to find out that men might be just as picky the ladies, although possibly for a different set of reasons!

Whether you and your spouse have already run the gauntlet of options, or are just walking in the door, there is one line of designer bridal jewelry that the friendly staff of I. Gorman Jewelers might be wise to point you towards right off the bat...A leader in modern design for over 130 years, Niessing has long earned the utmost respect from loving couples, purveyors of fine art and jewelry designers alike. Famous for reducing a design down to its most basic elements, Niessing never fails to create some of the world's most elegantly minimalistic modern bridal jewelry.

While responsible for scores or highly innovative ring designs and patented fabrication techniques, Niessing is possibly most famous for inventing the "tension setting" technique--an ingenious process that allows a diamond to remain secure in its setting with only two points of contact, providing a stunningly unimpeded view of the stone.

The Victory engagement ring is one of Niessing's most spectacular tension set designs and represents everything that the brand has striven for in its ideals of graceful form and minimalism. Shown above in platinum, the Victory ring is also available at I. Gorman's in 18kt gold and a variety of widths to accommodate different size diamonds.

Did I mention that Niessing has been creating jewelry for over 130 years? So don't be surprised to find an exceptional variety of styles in their collection. The Plissee wedding/fashion ring offers the incredible impression of a metal band that has crumpled upon itself as if compressed by a vice. As unrefined as that may sound, the result is striking--a truly unique design that looks even more beautiful in person and will insure that you have admirers doing a double-take everywhere you go!

Sarah Graham: Harnessing the Beauty of Black at I. Gorman Jewelers

Bridal jewelry is arguably the single largest sector of the jewelry industry and for good reason. Even in the toughest economic times, young couples around the country are tying the knot and wish to express their undying love with a beautiful wedding or engagement ring. However, not all couples have the same tastes or budget. That is why I. Gorman's strives to provide its loyal customers with Washington DC's most diverse selection of bridal jewelry styles, handmade by the most talented an innovative designers.

There are so many great styles of bridal jewelry to choose from. You may prefer to stick with conventional gold or platinum or choose rings made out of numerous alternatives, including silver, titanium, tungsten carbide, ceramic or even wood. Each has it's own unique look and qualities, but one metal that few designers have been creative enough to work with happens to be one of my personal favorites, blackened steel! If you asked me what artist is creating the most beautiful blackened steel jewelry, I would answer you in a second...Sarah Graham!

Sarah's jewelry pushes the boundaries of convention by drawing on the arresting contrasts, inherent in the juxtaposition of 18 karat gold and blackened steel and accentuated by black, white and cognac color diamonds. It carries strong tones of thoughtfulness, attention to detail, quality and timelessness, all carried by an underlying theme of nature. Her signature combination of black, white, and gold colors immediately identifies the artist. Celebrities such as Sharon Stone and Kim Basinger own her jewelry.

I. Gorman Jewelers is happy to offer you a wide selection of Sarah Graham's gold and blackened steel wedding and engagement rings, such as pictured above, as well as an exciting collection of her stylish fashion jewelry.

Outstanding Octohedrans--a Diamond Necklace to Make the Pharohs Proud

I. Gorman Jewelers may be best known for their outstanding selection of bridal jewelry, but it is certainly not all they have to offer! With such a talented and diverse group of designers, it is inevitable that I. Gorman's has developed a collection of fashion jewelry that is sure to please discerning customers of nearly any taste!

Whether you stop by to browse their fabulous designer necklaces, stumble across that perfect pair of earrings, or hunt down a super unique bracelet, when you walk in the door at I. Gorman's, your bound to fall in love with something!

That certain piece of jewelry that I was left marveling over on my last visit was, not surprisingly, designed by an artist whom I have admired for years. Todd Reed is a self-taught metalsmith who has spent the last 15 years developing a line of fine jewelry that is coveted by fashion magazines and collectors alike. He has bucked convention by choosing work with diamonds in their natural forms and the result has been outstanding!

Todd Reed's Diamond Octohedran necklace makes an impact that even the most talented designers must strive to achieve. Its large, 8 sided natural color diamond is a fine example of symmetry and quite literally, a "beauty in-the-rough." Maybe that's what immortalized this design in my eyes. Cradled neatly by a pyramid of 18kt gold studded with colorless diamonds and hanging from a sturdy multi-linked chain, the overall effect of this necklace is one of an unquestionable raw power.

I. Gorman Jewelers Hip Rings of 2010

Finding hip rings starts with finding hip designers and in the DC area, the best place to find a wealth of innovative and talented jewelry designers is I. Gorman Jewelers!

While America boasts many such designers, sometimes it's worth searching outside of the box, especially when the result is discovering Gellner. An award winning German designer, Gellner is best known for his clean, tasteful forms and the trademark use of lustrous Tahitian pearls.

Yes, we said Tahitian pearls were Gellner's mainstay, but that's not holding him back from blessing us with this stellar collection of Disco Rings. He's brought fashion rings to the next level by setting a dazzling collection semi-precious colored gemstones or pearls on the newest style of urban-chic flexible jewelry quality plastic bands!

Shown above is Gellner's golden Citrine Disco Ring set in 18kt yellow gold on a champagne color band. Below is a delicious purple Amethyst Disco Ring set in 18kt white gold sporting a light pink band!
