when it's too hot to wear anything, what would you wear?

How many consecutive days of 90-something temperatures does it take to have a girl wanting to wear less and less and still be brilliantly accessorized? The recent heatwave had me pondering that very question and I decided to have the I. Gorman staff help me figure it out. After all, it will be August in mere hours, it seems, and we are definitely not close to being through the dog days of summer.

Sooooo, I put the very question in the headline to the gang. Here are their (colorful) responses:

Nicole: "I would be naked on the beach wearing a magnificent necklace. Make it Antonio Bernardo's drop-dead Luminoso Especial." (Nicole!! You go girl!)

Sarah: "When it's that hot, my hair goes up and I want light but dramatic gold earrings like Majoral's Samoa pair. Gorgeous!"

Jill: "Give me big, colorful earrings. Margoni's aquamarine and silver pair, definitely. (We're all still stymied that Jill didn't pick diamonds, but maybe the heat got to her.)

Natalie: "A delicate necklace with a touch of color. Antonio Bernardo's emerald and tourmaline necklace would be perfect."

Juli: "I always wear pearl studs, but perhaps I'd need a bit more... like Majoral's pearl drops. Mmmmm."

Marilyn: "The biggest diamond ring in the store." (Full disclosure: Marilyn actually said this as she was running out the door...and she didn't bother to specify what type of diamond, or anything else for that matter. So I picked this Todd Reed beauty out for you, Marilyn. Hope you like it!)

Kay: "I'd go for one of the new Margoni necklaces; a really light chain with small, happy, colorful gemstones."

Aarti: "My birthday suit! Brown diamonds. And shades. Can't I have a tiara?" (Um, no.)

Adam (hey, so, he's a guy, but why not?): "My favorite Todd Reed ring. Simple but totally cool."

Me? I'm with Sarah – hair back, earrings on. Serious earrings. The perfect excuse for the Antonio Bernardo RessonĂ¢ncia earrings of my dreams.

Finally, Nancy, (not to be outdone by Aarti) gave the quintessential reply: "Just a smile on my face." (First time she's ever refused jewelry. Imagine!)

That's our story...we're sticking to it. Because we know it will be hot and sticky again all too soon.

And what would you wear when it's too hot to wear anything?

a color riot.

i love our garden! or, in the words of my favorite #millennial, i LURVE our garden! there is color and texture and happiness everywhere i turn. from the impossible-to-capture brilliant blue of the teeniest forget-me-nots to the hot-hot pink of the sprightly butterfly bushes, a meandering stroll through it will never fail to make my day.

there is every shade of purple imaginable in the violets, the fairytale-worthy allium, the coneflowers, catmint, and deep, dark false indigo.

yellows are blazing to buttery: the yarrows become bouncing dots out front; the peonies i jokingly refer to as "sunny side up" bring instant smiles.

roses flourish in every hue: the sweet, teeny weeny red babies, the lipstick red of the huge chrysler imperial, the baby-soft pink of the climbing rose that is finally reaching the sun at the top of the fence and showing its happiness with the best display ever. and "marilyn," ever the peach-perfect showpiece, even offstage.

the garden's greenery is as complex as the garden itself...i adore the mashup of hostas and all the other greens. even whites are so much more than the absence of color when you look at the spectacular clematis and the lush carpet of azaleas.

then there are the painted ferns, works of colorful art all on their own. as are the lily pulitzer-ready caladiums, just waiting for an outing. speaking of which, time to get outside...

enjoy the tour!

(with thanks and hugs to mike, panchi and steve for their dirty digging and dedication to this splendid show, and to our beautiful margoni jewelry collection whose rainbow of colors inspired this post!)

you just know when it's right.

many couples refer to the lucky moment when they met. ivan has one of those stories about how he found our newest bridal designer, satoru. was it love at first sight? well, there was certainly an instant attraction to satoru's incredible rings...

ivan tells of walking into a jewelry store in his travels and being struck by the young designer's work. he wasn't at a trade show; he wasn't looking to find anyone new. but he spotted satoru's work and knew it belonged in our store. interestingly, satoru had launched his business and researched jewelry stores and had actually targeted i. gorman as one of the top stores he'd like to approach to carry his rings. thus began a match made in heaven.

when you see satoru's akatsuki collection, you'll understand. you'll see what ivan saw. you, too, will appreciate the subtlety of the design, the attention to detail, the precision of a ruby aligned with a diamond, the clean japanese lines and technical perfection of it all.

and when you talk to satoru, which you'll be able to do at the ultimate ring event on april 12 and 13, you'll learn that he's totally easygoing and open – just a cool, interesting guy. he'll tell you how he's intrigued by shape, why his rings are so architectural, and the fascinating story behind the dense, heavy wood from guatemala used in his lignum wedding band collection. and you may not be able to resist ordering a matched pair as your own rings.

bring your perfect match to meet ours, and our eight other equally remarkable and adored designers, at the ultimate ring event on friday and saturday, april 12-13, from 11-6 each day. you never know – one thing may lead to another and you may find the rings, and designer, of your dreams.

all work and some play :)

imagine going on a family trip to the coolest jewelry trade show in europe, spending dollars by the thousands (added up as euros, no less) and days and nights with your parents and sibling (or with your kids!)

if your last name is gorman, it's really not that unusual – and the huge business commitments of the trip can easily be as fun and fabulous as the moments stolen for pleasure. (this is where i indulge myself with travel envy and wish my last name was gorman, too!)

the four gormans are just back from the annual family trek to munich where they spent quality time with some of our favorite designers creating amazing new pieces for the coming season. not only that, they discovered some wonderful new talents to fill and brighten the cases back home. their purchases will start arriving soon – how nice that they're sharing their "souvenirs" with us!

but let's not forget play time – they saw incredible sights, ate amazing meals and, luckily for me, took snapshots! i convinced them to let you enjoy their family trip through their photos. smile and say "prost!"
the "kids," nicole and adam, enjoying the chilly sights.
ivan and bonnie say cheese!
ivan + peter schmid of atelier zobel = wicked new designs.
so many marcel roelofs clasps; so little time...
peré from majoral tempts nicole...again.
the best possible way to see gellner pearls: in quantity!
and a very, very good time was had by all!
