it's fascinating to see which designers attract which brides and vice versa. so we took a totally non-scientific approach to the topic and thought we'd match up the dozen designers at our ultimate ring event with the type of girl we envision selecting one of their designs as the ring of her dreams.

if you consider yourself arty, funky, offbeat or simply singular, we see you orbiting the powerfully particular universe of todd reed and alishan. todd's unique work with raw diamonds is absolutely magnetic to a certain audience (full disclosure: i'm a todd girl; more about that in a future post.) alishan's handcrafted rings are a little frillier, but far from fussy – think teeny, intricate, artistic carvings and you're headed in the right direction.

can there really be a shopping experience perfect enough to warrant being called "ultimate?" i mean, really? shopping? but think about it: what if all of the best options for something you wanted to buy could magically materialize in one place at one time? wouldn't it be easier for you to pick out the perfect pair of pumps? a suit? what if it was cars? or houses? ok, reality check.

but what if it was all the best options for one of the most important purchases you'll ever make? what if it was a carefully curated selection of engagement rings and wedding bands? you'll probably have the rings far longer than the pumps, suit, cars and house combined. and they're conveniently small and literally hundreds of rings to choose from can actually fit in the same place at the same time.

which brings us to i. gorman's ultimate ring event. because it is exactly that. twelve international designers, whose collections cover every category from classic to artsy to ultra-modern, will all be in the store, for two full days (february 24-25 if you want to mark your calendar now) to cater to your every whim. try on every ring in the place. talk to a designer about creating something that's "a little of this and a little of that." or brainstorm with any of them to come up with a ring that's yours and yours alone. ask questions. pick diamonds. sip champagne. take advantage of free parking (this particular ultimate event is really all-inclusive...) it's a very fun way to purchase something really serious. the ultimate in serious fun, i guess.

what is it about a sale?

four little letters. so innocent. so compelling. so seductive. the strongest women i know are reduced to well, you know. perhaps because by changing just one of those four little letters, we find another equally seductive word: save. ah. 10%, 20%. possible to resist, perhaps. but 50, 60, 70%? there is no power in the universe, short of kryptonite, to keep me from caving to 70%. you?

the real beauty of i. gorman's annual sale is the beauty you get to take home with you. the sale lets you finally get those earrings you've longed for but just couldn't justify at full price. or it lets you explore a secret side of you -- giving you a pass to toy with something that isn't necessarily "you" as you have been, but you as you could be.

last year's sale ended with me owning my first piece of gellner, but not what you might expect. the necklace is a little rocker-chic; an oxidized chain clasped with a tahitian pearl. i. love. it. it goes with anything and everything and i swear that when i put it on i feel just a little bit edgier than i did a second before.

this year's sale isn't over, but i already know that the antonio bernardo "open cage" earrings (i name jewelry...why not?) will finally, finally, finally be in my ears instead of in i. gorman's case.

two amazing bargains. two beautiful pieces to love. color me happy.

lucky me...i recently found myself in milwaukee in the middle of a snowstorm. we were racing to get someone to a plane (that did, miraculously, take off) and decided we could take a short detour to the Milwaukee Art Museum. i'd been there before, and seen the exhibits, but i thought i'd see what new discoveries i could make. if you've never been there, it's hard to imagine, but the place has wings. deservedly so -- the architecture alone is magical. Santiago Calatrava's Quadraccio Pavilion is celebrating its tenth anniversary, but it definitely takes you to the future. when you enter, you're tempted to look straight ahead at Lake Michigan, but don't forget to look up. the building is as much a work of art as the fabulous Chihuly sculpture that greets you.

why talk about a museum in a jewelry store's blog? so much of our work is so modern, and architectural, i can't help but see the parallels. i see shapes that remind me of Germany's Step by Step and Brazil's Antonio Bernardo. Chihuly's twisty glass reminds me of Majoral's more unconventional work and the bold color combinations the Margonis put together. and a trip into the museum store leads me to... a future blog post!

trend report 2012 -- says who?

whom, might i ask, has the final say for all these "top jewelry trends" that are hitting my inbox? (that will teach me to sign up for google alerts for "jewelry trends." go figure.) everyone and their sister has an opinion. the spring runways were ages ago, and we're definitely in-between the big red carpet moments, so does celebrity bling even count right now? yet terms like "yellow gold" and "chandeliers" are popping up on blogs and in magazines all over. even colors get claimed: one person's "tangerine" is another's "orangeade." what if you're in the mood for something a little more "cantaloupe?" will others snicker behind your back?

when it comes to jewelry, i tend to trend to practical -- not having a celeb's budget, i have to love a piece and be able to picture myself wearing it with oh so many looks for oh so many years. if it happens to be super-current, that's a happy bonus. we're talking gems and jewels here and it's harder, for me anyway, to justify the dollars on a sassy necklace that may feel dated two years from now than on an impulse purchase of skinny jeans, designer or not.

oh, and when, sometime later this year, i start going on and on about pearls because they're hot, hot, hot, please don't give me grief about not giving in to trends. sometimes a girl's just gotta go for it.

well, i'm here to save you. can't find the perfect thing in your favorite jewelry shop? i say a lovely gift certificate is just the ticket. you're worried that you're asking her or him to S-H-O-P for themselves, like that's a bad thing? it's not. trust me. you're actually presenting a totally personal gift that says "i get you - and i know you might pick out something i wouldn't and i want you to have the best gift ever." and when the lucky recipient is presented with a cool gift certificate, packaged, wrapped and presented like an actual gift (see little black bag post below,) that is one awesome thing to unwrap.

that little black bag. the one that makes bells jingle in my head even before i open it. (ok, not exactly.) it's quite mysterious, actually – all this blackness – bag, tissue, ribbon. why so dark? perhaps to best contrast with what sparkles within? that must be it.

and then there's the split of champagne, also black, of course. how cool is that? just perfect for a spontaneous mimosa!

so what's inside this year? those absolutely sleek and architectural earrings i tried on at the designer show? ( i swear, whoever invented wish lists was a GENIUS!)

here's hoping we all get the little black bag of our dreams this year...

once again, i. gorman is hosting our annual designer show on friday and saturday, december 2-3. the shows are something we started doing 16 years ago and they've become more and more popular with each year's growth.

if you've never been to one, let me tell you what to expect. the store looks the same, but different. we clear the showcases of their regular pieces and each designer takes over a section and makes it his or hers. you'll be greeted at the door (after you've taken advantage of our free parking) and offered champagne or another beverage. after that, it's all up to you.

you may choose to start with a walk around to look at all the incredible work you've never seen before. each of the 10 international designers who is attending will bring all their latest work to show, share and sell (and they love to impress.) or you may just head straight to a favorite designer and start chatting, oohing and ahhing and trying things on. you can ask the designers about custom changes to a particular piece, or complete custom designs inspired by something you see. the more you interact with the designers, the better the experience for everyone. it's a totally fun way to shop!

it's not by accident that the show is always in early december. we are absolutely ready to wrap your purchases for holiday gifts while you wait. equally important: adam, nicole, bonnie, ivan, jill, zue and aarti will all be on hand to help you make those tough decisions!

so who are the designers? For the first time, maria rzewuska and schmuckwerk are coming from germany. enric majoral is coming from spain, antonio bernardo from brazil. also from germany: gellner, michael weggenmann and marcel roelofs. margoni is coming from greece and todd reed and alishan will be here from boulder and california, respectively. we promise to post next week with a little more information about each designer – in the meantime you can check out their work on our website.

the show is from 11am to 6pm each day. there's complimentary parking across the street at colonial parking on friday. on saturday, just pull up to the valet in front.

Ring Fever, Spring Fever - I Gorman's Ultimate Ring Event is here!

Our Monday morning lull is non-existent today and while you might feel bad for us at I. Gorman know this: we’re all a buzz because of the Ultimate Ring Event coming up this Friday and Saturday.

Yes, you read right. Once again, we’ll be hosting a dozen phenomenal designers who will be bringing their entire engagement and wedding band collections. Just in time for spring wedding fever!

Of our classic favorites we’re of course going to be hosting Gebrueder Schaffrath’s line from Germany. If you’re into clean lines and a minimal aesthetic, then these designs are for you. You might have to do a double take though when you see the Lumina collection rings with floating diamonds; diamonds that dance and gleam in a constant state of free motion in order to catch every bit of light possible. And if these designs make you feel like a bull in a china shop then worry not. Put your trust in the hands of Schaffrath’s precise, German engineering.

Perhaps you prefer something with some intricacy and mystique. Maybe you’ve been eyeing some designs by Maevona. With their Celtic influence, these engagement designs by Maeve Gillies have a timeless look without being blah. Who can resist anything named after Scottish islands?

For the rugged side of you we’ve got superstar Todd Reed coming with his collection of raw diamond designs. While Todd is a charmer you may not be able to take your eyes off of his earthy, bold designs that incorporate all varieties of raw, rose cut and cube diamonds. If the mimosas don’t put you in a happy daze, Todd’s collection sure will!

As always, along with our favorites we always like to bring in something new, something fresh. This time, we’ll have a collection of romantic, vintage designs by Kirk Kara. These antique designs will make you feel like royalty, so watch out Kate Middleton!

Art and the Admirer: I. Gorman Designer Show a Hit Once Again

While we’re finally starting to recover from the daze of the I. Gorman Annual Designer Show, we can’t claim that we have a lack of stories to tell to anyone who couldn’t make it. The truth is that beautiful jewelry, great company and a glass of champagne could make any weekend fabulous.

But let’s say this: it wasn’t just any weekend. In fact, it started on Thursday evening as the Gorman posse ushered in one by one, designers from the globe over. And of course, in the pre-show excitement we always get a sneak peak at the jewelry to be unveiled the next day. After a few dozen rounds of ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ we all tried to get our act together and rest up for the next day.

Friday started with a bang. Now, our designers aren’t your average artists. No thick rimmed glasses, fauxhemian ideals or exasperated dramatics. Among our group of eleven designers were the most talented yet humble artists you can find. For those of you that made it in over the weekend, did you have a favorite designer?

As you walked in you were greeted on the left by Alishan, a long time I. Gorman fave, and his wife Lydia. The two, who have been in business for decades just ooze with sophistication and grace. That is before we even took a look at their jewelry which as usual was elegant and dazzlingly unique.

If you had a chance to talk to Peter Schmid of Atelier Zobel, you could have seen his eyes light up as he picked up his creations piece by piece and explained the story behind them. His favorite: an asymmetrically carved piece of turquoise in a bold cuff bracelet. When we asked him how he designs his jewelry he told us that he simply lets the materials inspire him. And of course, the alarmingly dapper Marcel Roelofs and Michael Weggenmann were wooing the crowd – and not just with their German accents! The list is too long to ramble off, so if you’re aching to know more just make sure you come by next time.

The energy was buzzing in the air as soon as the doors opened. That is no surprise; what is art without an admirer? What followed was a mix between Match.com and star-aligned fate. Everyone mingled through, admiring the beauty of it all until they found the one sparkling, glowing, marvelous piece of jewelry that was calling out to them. Some of us had a few pieces calling out in unison! And if you thought champagne might make the brain foggy, know this: it can make things sparkle a bit more too.

And the weekend continued like so with the entire store buzzing, glowing and laughing. We have to admit that it was one of the best events in the history of I. Gorman shows. Not only did we have the most amazing designers you can imagine but, YOU, our wonderful patrons brought the show to life.

Our Story

Ivan and Bonnie Gorman founded I. Gorman Jewelers in 1981 with a vision to offer the Washington area high quality, creative jewelry in a warm and inviting atmosphere. Their son, Adam, a Graduate Gemologist, joined in this vision in 1996, as did daughter Nicole in 2004. Together with the seven other "family" members, I. Gorman is about to celebrate its 25th anniversary in the same downtown DC location. Today, I. Gorman Jewelers is proud to be an award-winning retail destination featuring cutting edge design in bridal and fashion jewelry, and customer service that is second to none.

Appraisals: All appraisals include testing and documentation by Graduate Gemologist and Certified Appraiser, as well as gem identification, metal assay, and grading analysis. Value assessment is available for current retail, estate or liquidation purposes. We also perform stone security inspections, photograph of each piece, and complimentary estimates and updates.
